Cone Health Ventures announced today the formation of a new company, Nclusive Scan, to address accessibility disparities within Cone Health’s network of hospitals and outpatient facilities. This collaboration with Triad-based entrepreneur Somer Stanley is a significant step toward ensuring all patients receive equitable care.

Nclusive Scan is a groundbreaking platform that utilizes QR code technology to make vital health care information accessible to everyone, regardless of their communication needs. The platform goes beyond traditional interpretation methods and delivers critical information through multiple formats, including American Sign Language (ASL) videos, spoken descriptions, and simplified text (simplified to a 6th grade reading level), ensuring accessibility for patients who are Deaf, visually impaired, or neurodivergent. A pilot rollout will begin this fall with potential for future expansion across Cone Health, creating a model for improved health equity.

This new venture is poised to have an incredible impact on Cone Health’s commitment to value-based care.  “The Nclusive Scan partnership will empower us to better serve diverse patient populations, which is a critical step in improving health equity for the communities we serve,” said Michelle Adamolekun, EVP, Chief People & Culture Officer at Cone Health. “We are excited to partner with Somer and the Cone Health Ventures team on this groundbreaking effort.” The collaboration is further strengthened by a high-impact partnership with Nvidia, the world’s largest company and leader in accelerated computing and AI. Through Nvidia’s Inception Program, Nclusive Scan will leverage Nvidia’s cutting-edge technology to enhance its platform’s capabilities, potentially enabling more dynamic and personalized accessibility features in the future.

Nclusive Scan’s founder, Somer Stanley, is uniquely positioned to lead this effort because her mission is deeply personal. A passionate advocate for accessibility, Somer’s journey began with her childhood experience witnessing the isolation her Deaf friends faced. This inspired her to become fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and dedicate her life to bridging communication gaps. Her commitment was solidified in 2019 when her one-year-old daughter was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, which resulted in the removal of her right eye. This experience brought the issue of inaccessible health care information into sharp focus and confirmed Somer’s lifelong belief: “Everyone deserves equal access to critical information.” Her mission is also deeply influenced by her family—her husband, a deployed military member, has shown her firsthand the importance of resilience and service. Together, their experiences fuel Nclusive Scan’s vision of breaking down barriers for those most in need.

The formation of Nclusive Scan exemplifies Cone Health Ventures’ mission to identify and nurture innovative solutions that meet the greatest needs and top strategic aims of Cone Health, ultimately creating value for the companies it partners with, the health system, and the communities it serves. To accelerate its mission and future expansion, Nclusive Scan is currently seeking to raise a $3 million dollar seed round of investment. “Nclusive Scan is about breaking down barriers. Everyone deserves equal access to information, whether they’re deaf, blind, neurodivergent, or simply need content in a different format. By making documents instantly accessible across ASL, audio, captions, and simplified text, we’re not just checking a compliance box, we’re opening doors to education, health care, and opportunity for millions of people who’ve been left out for too long,” said Carter Smith, managing director of Cone Health Ventures.

Cone Health is taking a leadership role in advancing health equity by making accessibility a core part of its innovation strategy. Through Cone Health Ventures, the system is not only investing in solutions like Nclusive Scan but also setting a national example of how health systems can close communication gaps and ensure every patient has the tools they need to understand and manage their care.
